The tower of the king's castle
The tower of the King’s Château is the only roman donjon still intact in the whole of the Gironde. This stronghold, which was home to the town hall until 1720, was built in the 13th century either by order of king Louis VIII, or by order of Henry III of England.
The donjon is 32 metres high from the lowest terrace to the top. If you are ready and willing to climb the 118 steps you’ll be rewarded by a truly impressive view over the town of Saint-Emilion!
The fortress, which once stood as a symbol of royal power within the very walls of the free town, today houses the celebrations of the Jurade. If you’re around in June or September you might be lucky enough to see the castle in all its former glory with the gowned Jurats and their official proclamations. June is the time of judgement of the new wine and September is when the beginning of the grape harvest is announced.
